My Father

My Father

When I began to prepare for my first Toastmasters speech ice breaker, I thought about what I would talk about. I figured it would be better to share something or someone I am familiar with. Then, I thought of my father, who influenced me greatly—not only because he is the person who gave me life, but also because he is a significant role model in my life.

My father was a philosophy professor at a top university in China. During the Cultural Revolution, he found himself at the center of the movement at Beijing University, which is the No. 1 university in China. For those unfamiliar, the Cultural Revolution took place from 1966 to 1976, initiated by Chairman Mao who gathered a group of radicals to challenge the Communist Party's leadership. During this time, chaos engulfed the country, making it one of the most destructive periods in China's history. The Cultural Revolution resulted in approximately 1.5 million deaths, with millions more suffering imprisonment or severe humiliation.

My father survived but his health was significantly affected. You might expect him to harbor resentment; however, I never heard him blame anyone for the harm he faced. He told me, 'It is not easy to figure out what was right and wrong during that time. There is no need to blame those who participated in the movement believing they were doing something right.' He reminded me not to follow any tide blindly without thoughtful consideration. This wisdom showcased his large heart and tolerance, reinforcing the importance of forgiveness and maintaining a clear mind to truly see the world.

Another story is linked to the Tangshan Earthquake in 1976, which occurred early in the morning at 3:42 local time and is believed to have been the deadliest earthquake of the 20th century, claiming approximately 650,000 lives. The epicenter was about 84 miles from Beijing, where I lived at the time. It was a hot summer night, and I was deep in sleep when my mother woke me up. The dark room was filled with noise—people were running and crying. I remembered thinking, 'Is there a big parade again?' But then I could feel everything shaking. My mother, terrified, exclaimed, 'Earthquake! Earthquake!' At that moment, my father’s calm voice cut through the chaos: 'Calm down and leave quickly!' We escaped the building with only the clothes on our backs, while many others were too frantic to dress, their fear palpable.

Even at the age of just 8, I vividly remember that night and was amazed at my father's composure in the face of an emergency. His words echo in my mind during times of crisis: calm down and face it.

These are just a few glimpses of my father’s life. He endured much suffering but did not become bitter; he maintained an optimistic view of the world. As a Chinese medicine practitioner, he often talked about how Chinese medicine, including practices like acupuncture for migraines and weight loss acupuncture, contributed to a balanced life and alleviated hardships. I hope to embody his qualities and serve as a role model for my daughter, just as my father was for me, instilling values of strength and calmness amidst life’s challenges, akin to the principles found in Traditional Chinese Medicine and anxiety treatment that promote resilience and well-being.
